Chemistry is a discipline fundamental to a wide variety of careers in industry, research and the allied health fields. A strong foundation in chemistry is basic need for careers in medicine, molecular biology, biochemistry, industries, pharmacy, research, chemical engineering. Chemistry Department of Wollo University established in 2006 with 87 students in Education Program. In 2008 Applied Chemistry started and education was sustained till 2010 E.C. Since then Only Applied program is going on. Currently apart from Undergraduate program, graduate program with Organic and Physical Chemistry is started in Regular, Extension and Summer Program including Master in Chemistry for summer program.

Producing knowledgeable and skilled professional chemists that will be a workforce in the manufacturing industry and service providing enterprises which are qualified in understanding and utilizing appropriate technologies and hence contribute their share in meeting the national vision of ‘alleviating poverty and joining mid-level income earning countries’

Prepare knowledgeable, skilled, and attitudinally mature graduate chemists; promote and enhance research focusing on knowledge and technology transfer; design and provide community and consultancy services consistent with the country’s priority needs.

The following are the broad objectives of the Department of Chemistry to:

• Disseminate knowledge in chemistry and related areas through active participation in related professional activities,such as Chemical Society of Ethiopia, Regional Networking, Workshops,Symposia and Publications;
• Develop capabilities for the provision of consultancy and technical services as well as short term specialized training to both public and private sectors;
• Produce chemists who create job opportunities by applying the acquired knowledge and skills and
• Build research capabilities as required by the national development program and academic needs.
