Introduction

The Abay-awash Basins Research Institute (AABRI) is established following duly constituted and convened of the institute by the senate of Wollo University (senate no. 05/2012) on April 09/2012 E.C at agenda 2.

1. The Need for the Institute

• Pressure on Water bodies
• Degradation of ecosystems
• Less efforts to restore degraded water bodies
• Demand for water is increasing
• Water conflict

2. Goals

• Develop Abay-Awash sub-basins in all aspects.
• Restore the forest landscapes of Abay -Awash sub-basins.
• Restore water bodies in the two basins.
• Establish central data base for water related research.
• Produce ecofriendly technology for restoration of the water bodies.
• Examine sanctioned and hegemonic knowledge production on Abay River water.
• Produce contemporary discourses on Abay-Awash River Basins.
• Improved livelihoods of the people in the Abay-Awash (Wollo area) Sub-Basins.

• Collaboration with stakeholders.
• Restoration, protection and utilization of our natural resource.
• Mainstreaming water issues and other environmental issues at school level.
• Research projects, activities of community services and consultancy services.
• Organize international and national conferences, symposiums, and seminars on presentations that have created good opportunities for the communication of research ideas and share experiences among scholars.
• Communication : In Amharic, English and Arabic languages.
• Arabic Language: for water resource engineering, hydrology and political science students.
• Water club : high schools – Macroinvertebrate kit.
• Resource mapping.
