Wollo University announces Lake Hayq as a UNESCO Ecohydrology Demonstration Site

Wollo University is thrilled to announce that Lake Hayq has been formally certified as a UNESCO Ecohydrology Demonstration Site, effective since October 1, 2024.

This recognition demonstrates our dedication to sustainable water management and ecosystem restoration using Ecohydrology methodologies. Wollo University and the Ministry of Water and Energy, which has been directing the Lake Hayq rehabilitation project since 2019, collaborated to achieve this distinction.

Researchers from multiple academic units have made significant contributions to this initiative, including the College of Natural Sciences, which played a key role in organizing the project, as well as the College of Agriculture, College of Social Sciences and Humanities, College of Health and Medicine, and School of Veterinary Medicine.

Additionally, institutional support from the Community and Training Directorate Office, the Vice President Office of Research and Technology Transfer, and the President’s Office has been vital to the successful execution of this project. Their collective efforts have helped drive impactful restoration activities that align with UNESCO’s Ecohydrology principles.

We would also like to thank the Worebabo and Tehulederie Districts, REDD+, SNV, and Mekane Yesus Church for their crucial help with the restoration. Lastly, Wollo University is proudly share this Certificate accompanied by the UNESCO Ecohydrology Demonstration Site.
