School of Veterinary Medicine
Wollo University officially established Department of Veterinary Medicine in 2008 G.C under the then Faculty of Agriculture and after 2 years Department of Veterinary Medicine merged with department of Animal Science and existed as department of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science up to 2011 G.C under the College of Agriculture. However, in mid of 2011 G.C due to restructuring of the University, department of Veterinary Medicine upgraded to school level instead of being under College of Agriculture with positive understanding of the importance of upgrading to School by the University management.
The School of Veterinary Medicine offers a six-year program with an educational qualification of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) that educates students in the broad field of veterinary medicine, encourages critical and analytical thinking, and prepares students for lifelong learning and professional growth. The primary educational goal of the School of Veterinary Medicine is to prepare students for a lifetime of productive activity in the veterinary profession. Until the 2018 G.C academic year the school has graduated 6 DVM graduates batches. In addition to the DVM program, the School is currently working vigorously to expand its training programs at different levels in various areas of veterinary medicine and related science to meet emerging societal needs. The newly launched undergraduate program in Veterinary Laboratory Technology and postgraduate programs on Veterinary Epidemiology and Health Economics and Veterinary Parasitology are part of this endeavor to respond to the ever increasing societal demands.
In addition to its teaching programs, the School also provides diagnostic and consultancy services in animal health problems, conduct research in livestock diseases and production with the final goals of improving the food security and safety of Ethiopia by enhancing livestock productivity and safeguarding the public from zoonoses.
Vision
To be top 5 leading teaching and research‐intensive Veterinary School in Ethiopia by 2025 G.C for its quality, relevance and impact, as also for developing people, creating knowledge and making a difference locally and globally. Our teaching and learning programmes, research and post graduate training and services shall be recognized for its quality, customer and stakeholder relevance and impact, being community engaged and sustainable.
Mission
- Promote the art and science of veterinary medicine through acquisition, application and dissemination of scientific advances that help in diagnosis, treatment, prevention and control of diseases and maintain the health of animals and human,
- Engage in applied and basic science research that can support the development endeavors of the country and advance learning through the extension of the frontiers of knowledge and creative activities,
- Enhance productivity of animals through latest methods of animal breeding, nutrition and modern management and biotechnological techniques, offer continuing education and training program linked with professional upgrading of field and academic staff for the benefit of the region and country at large and create a knowledge-based society drawing strength from scientific excellence and institutional capabilities.
- In pursuing recognition and excellence in its core functions of research, teaching and learning, and integrating engagement with society and communities into these, the school will use quality, relevance, diversity and sustainability as its navigational markers.
