Professor Berhanu Abegaz delivers an insightful lecture titled “Evolution of Higher Education in Ethiopia and Its Importance for Pan-Africanism” to an audience of students and faculty members at Wollo University.
Professor Berhanu, a renowned scholar in the field of education, emphasized Ethiopia’s significant contributions to the development of science and higher education, tracing its roots back to pre-colonial times. He highlighted the importance of traditional higher education systems, specifically referring “Memhir Akalewold,” which played a pivotal role in nurturing intellectual growth and knowledge dissemination in the country.
During his lecture, Professor Berhanu articulated that the primary goal of the current higher education system should be to produce graduates who surpass their instructors in knowledge and capability. “We must equip our students not only with academic knowledge but also with the skills necessary for economic independence,” he stated, stressing the importance of self-sufficiency for individuals and their families.
A significant part of his lecture addressed the urgent need for a culturally sensitive policy framework to direct the modernization of higher education. Professor Berhanu advocated for integrating global standards with indigenous knowledge and community wisdom, enriching education with relevant perspectives and sustainable approaches to problem-solving. He said that indigenous knowledge is essential for achieving truly reliable and contextually grounded modernization.
Further emphasizing the local context, Professor Berhanu suggested that Wollo University should leverage the Wollo community’s wisdom of co-existence and harmony to excel in fostering a culture of open discussion with respect. He believes that such an environment is crucial for cultivating critical thinking and collaboration among students and faculty.
Professor Berhanu also delved into the broader implications of higher education for Pan-Africanism, arguing that a strong educational foundation is essential for fostering unity and collaboration among African nations. By investing in quality education, Ethiopia can lead the way in advancing the continent’s intellectual and economic development.
The lecture sparked engaging discussions among attendees, with many expressing their appreciation for Professor Berhanu’s insights and vision for the future of higher education in Ethiopia.
