Office of Research and Publication Directorate

One of the mission of Wollo University is to solve community problems and foster social, economic, political and cultural development of the area in particular and country in general through research. To achieve this the university is expected to identify the problem areas and prioritize them accordingly by considering the local context and the GTP of the country. Since research is one of the three pillars of the university, it is integrated in teaching-learning process where a teaching staff devotes 40% of its time for research, while research staff of the University devotes 60% of their time for research.

Research Direction

In reference to the mission statement, the University’s research direction is grounded on the following cardinal principles:

  • Be relevance to the community and in line with Growth and Transformation Plan of the country
  • Provision of intellectual stimulating environment for staff and researcher’s;
  • Excellence in both applied and basic researches that satisfy international standards;

As a result, the directorate office has the following objectives:

  • Conduct problem-oriented researches on priority areas based on local, regional or nationwide interest(s)
  • Making research an integral part of the teaching-learning process through interdisciplinary and group researches from which students can benefit;
  • Develop flexible and feasible working procedures for research proposal preparation, review and approval, and financial request;
  • Create internal funding mechanisms for research and publication;
  • Develop a system to award best researchers so as to enhance staff motivation and productivity in research;
  • Promote collaborative research with local and international research institutions and organizations that would facilitate the university’s capacity building efforts and generation of external research funds;
  • Develop mechanisms for improved management of information systems and facilities access to international literature and database;
  • Establish a research and publication database;
  • Develop research quality assurance mechanisms;
  • Develop monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to ensure the proper implementation of research and publication activities;
  • Formulate appropriate methods for the promotion and dissemination of research results.
  • Conduct national and international conferences, workshops and seminars
  • Plan and carry out capacity building activities to academic and research staffs

Priority Area Identification and Thematic Areas

Based on guidelines and priorities set by the Senate or the Research and Community Services Vice President’s Office, Colleges, Institutes, Schools and Departments shall set priorities of research within their respective spheres. In determining their research priorities and setting thematic areas, departments, schools, institutes and colleges shall take into account:

  • The needs and priorities of the country;
  • The availability of resources including skilled work force, time and money; and
  • The strategic plan of the respective department, college, faculty, school and the University.

In tandem with the current needs of the country, the research priority of the university will be in the following nine (9) areas, yet, these priorities may be subject to revision:

Research Planning and Administration

The research administration process in the University will have three phases:

  • pre-award,
  • post-award administration, and
  • termination phase.

The pre-award phase include identification of funding opportunities; preparation of research proposal; submission of a proposal for review; approval of research award; and singing of project contract for WU sponsored and externally funded projects (for externally funded projects, a contract agreement will be prepared and singed based on mutual consent.).

The post-award administration starts with the registration of the research project at the University research and publication directorate office. The directorate office will officially register the project and submit the necessary documents of new project to the office of Vice president for Research and Community Service. After this, the VPRCS office will inform in writing all the relevant bodies in the University to facilitate the execution of the research activities in compliance with the project documents and agreements. The principal investigators is responsible to report the progress and completion of the project to the directorate office.

The last phase (termination phase) in the research process involves preparation of completed report; an exit workshop for all stakeholders; dissemination of research outputs; handing over of project properties as per the agreement, and possibilities for continuation of outputs and sustainability of projects activities.
